Overview

On the surface, two doctors getting married may seem like the perfect fit.

They both recognize and understand the difficult circumstances of the job, the extra hours, and the frequent night shifts. Additionally, they talk the same language –medicine–, which allows them to have conversations about medical conditions and ask for advice from one another without getting patronized or judged. Finally, the house income of two physicians allows them to have a decent lifestyle, and they don’t have to worry about college fees for their kids. However, despite all of these benefits, there are still some pitfalls and inconveniences that medical marriages need to deal with just like any other relationship. In this article, we will discuss some of these difficulties and how to overcome them.

The difficulties of medical marriages

The key is to compromise!

Working as a doctor requires a lot of time spent in the hospital. Multiply that by two, and a medical couple won’t be able to spend time together, take care of the kids, or do family stuff with each other.

In some cases, an opportunity arises for one spouse to work their dream job, so the other partner needs to decide whether to keep their job or sacrifice it to help their spouse achieve their goals.

Type A-personalities can fit

A lot of physicians tend to have type-A personalities, which makes it difficult for them to compromise, as both of them feel like a priority in a relationship and that they shouldn’t get neglected.

The key to solving this issue is by talking about the problems you face and not avoiding confrontation since it only exacerbates the situation.

Balancing personal and professional life

This tip is easier said than done, but it is essential to raise your kids in a healthy environment.

Make sure to create a calendar and stick to it, so you can have more time for your wife/husband and kids.

No place for competition

Oftentimes, doctors in a medical marriage find themselves competing with their spouse because they make more money or have advanced further in their career.

However, you should learn to erase the concept of competition when it comes to your spouse. Instead, be happy for them and celebrate their success. Doing this will prevent any tension or feelings of jealousy between the couple.

Takeaway message

Ensuring that your medical marriage is successful is an important step to optimize your personal and professional life.

In a previous article, we talked about the negative impact of unhealthy medical marriage on physicians’ performances and the healthcare they provide. If you have are in a medical marriage or thinking about marrying a doctor, feel free to share your story and thoughts with the rest of u.
